Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) were created in 2006 through a proclamation of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, to promote quality education and research in basic sciences. Soon after the announcement, two of these institutes at Pune and Kolkata, respectively, were started in 2006. This was followed by an institute at Mohali (2007) and at Bhopal and Trivandrum in 2008. Each IISER is a degree granting autonomous institution with a prime focus to integrate science education and research, with a motive of attracting bright students and world class faculty.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal will provide a platform for the faculty to engage in high quality pedagogy, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to perform cutting edge research in frontier areas of basic sciences. The Institute is also committed to impart high moral and ethical values to students and create a genuine concern for social and environmental issues. With these set of broad objectives, it is believed that IISER Bhopal will emerge as a world-class Institute within a few years of its inception.

IISER Bhopal offer BS-MS (Dual Degree) programme, Integrated Ph.D. programme in Mathemetics and Physics and Ph.D. programme in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics and Physics. The details of these programs can be found under academic affairs.

Library

The Central Library, IISER Bhopal started in 2008. Currently houses around 6800 books, comprises of collection includes textbooks for the BS-MS and Ph.D curriculum in Physical Science, Chemical Science, Mathematical Science, Biological Science; Earth and Environmental Science. Library collection also includes documents in Computer Science, History of Science, light reading materials, Fictions, Stories, General books, Encyclopaedias and Dictionaries, Magazines etc. Research books & Monographs are also included in the collection for labs & research purpose.

On-line access to full text as well as bibliographic databases are being subscribed to facilitate research & teaching. Plans for library expansion includes subscription to all major scientific research journals as well as e-books, e-journals & bibliographic databases etc. Library operations are automated using KOHA Library Management Software. Central Library is now fully automated with all posible modern facilities. Web-OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) is accessible at URL: http://webopac.iiserb.ac.in/

Computer Centre

Presently, the Computer Centre of IISER Bhopal provides an institute wide 1 Gbps copper local area network that connects all the academic departments to the Computer Centre. Internet access is provided by 200 Mbps (1:1) dedicated Internet leased circuit through an Internet service provider. The Institute had a newly installed few advance servers of 2 X six core Intel Xeon processor X5670 @ 2.93 GHz with 12 MB L3 Cache, IQI 6.40 GT/s, 32 GB DDR3 1066 MHz RAM, hot plug SAS Hard Disk for running our own internal/external DNS, web based automation, centralized authentication mechanism using LDAP/Radius, storage services for each user of IISER Bhopal and personal homepage hosting services for academic staff. Digital Library services with appropriate networking system is being provided access to online library services to various databases with downloading facilities from institute network. The Institute is in the process to provide VPN facility to all the users of IISER Bhopal to access digital library, as well as institute network from remote location.With the help of Google, the Institute Computer Centre provides email facility with 7.3 GB mail storage space to each user of IISER Bhopal. The Institute is in the process to in house the official website.

There is a separate Computer Lab for UG and PG students based on Linux/Windows platform and with all major public domain application software. The Computer Centre has a Red Hat enterprise Linux cluster of high performance computing system for scientific research. The cluster is composed of 29 nodes where each computing node has dual Intel Xeon X5570 Quad core @ 2.93 GHz processors and the nodes are connected with infiniband interconnect to support more tightly coupled parallel applications.The Computer Centre equipped with to operate 24 hours a day, 365 days an year. It has a power back-up through redundant 10 KVA UPS and a 500 KVA automatic generator set. For the permanent campus at Bhauri, the Computer Center is in the process of laying the gigabit fibre optic backbone that connects all the Academic Departments, Hostels, Central Library, and Administrative Departments to it with 3 tier Cisco managed architecture. Internet and Email services shall be provided to all the users through dedicated 100/1000 Mbps network links. Most of the buildings of institute will be Wi-Fi enabled.

Central Instrumentation Facility

The state of the art NMR facility has Bruker’s AVANCE-III 500MHz and 400MHz FT NMR spectrometers. The spectrometers are equipped with BBFO & TXI-inverse probes, auto sampler and variable temperature unit. Soon, the facility will be equipped with a Bruker 700MHz FT-NMR spectrometer with 1.7mm & 5mm cryoprobes.

E-Classroom

IISER Bhopal has set up a Virtual classroom (or E-Classroom) in the Lecture Hall Complex at room L-2 with a seating capacity of 94. The Virtual classroom was inaugurated on 15 March, 2013 by Prof. N. Satyamurthy (IISER Mohali). The room is connected with high speed NKN network & equipped with campus Wi-Fi facility. The project funded by Dept of Electronics & Information Technology, Ministry of Communication & IT, Govt of India enables IISER Bhopal to be connected to all IISER’s, NIT’s, IIT’s across India over NKN in order to share knowledge and provide world-class education to its students.
