Dibrugarh University, the easternmost University of India was set up in 1965 under the provisions of the Dibrugarh University Act, 1965 enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly. It is a teaching-cum-affiliating University with limited residential facilities. The University is situated at Rajabheta at a distance of about five kilometres to the south of the premier town of Dibrugarh in the eastern part of Assam as well as India. Dibrugarh, a commercially and industrially advanced town in the entire northeastern region also enjoys a unique place in the fields of Art, Literature and Culture. The district of Dibrugarh is well known for its vast treasure of minerals (including oil and natural gas and coal), flora and fauna and largest concentration of tea plantations. The diverse tribes with their distinct dialects, customs, traditions and culture form a polychromatic ethnic mosaic, which becomes a paradise for the study of Anthropology and Sociology, besides art and culture. The Dibrugarh University Campus is wel l linked by roads, rails, air and waterways. The National Highway No.37 passes through the University Campus. The territorial jurisdiction of Dibrugarh University covers seven districts of Upper Assam, viz, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur. The University Campus extends over an area of more than 500 acres of which 60 acres are still covered under tea plantation. The University is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an institutional score of 71% (B grade). The Re-accreditation has also been done in March 2009. Dibrugarh University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and recognised by all Universities in India and abroad on reciprocal basis.

The University is currently providing hostel accommodation to the deserving meritorious students - both boys and girls. There are 14 hostels in the Campus most of which are named after the illustrious sons and daughters of Assam. As hostel seats are limited, all the students admitted to the various courses cannot be provided with hostel accommodation. Hostel seats are provided strictly on merit basis depending on availability of seats. Reservation of seats for S.C. and S.T. candidates is made as per rules of the University.
All the Hostels are managed by the University under the Hostel Rules. Adequate care is taken to provide all necessary facilities to the boarders.

Dibrugarh University Sports Board was formed in the year 1967 under the provision of the Dibrugarh University Act 1965 (Assam Act VIII of 1965) and run by an Ad-hoc Committee. The Constitution of the Sports Board was drafted in the year 1968. Since then the Sports Board was functioning and devoted it’s time for the development of Games and Sports of the seven districts of Upper Assam viz. Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Sibsagar & Tinsukia.
The main intention of the Sports Board is to look after the Games and Sports & Cultural activities of all the affiliated Colleges under D.U. Sports Board, Post Graduate Classes, arranging playing facilities to University community within the University campus. To fulfill the purpose, the Dibrugarh University Sports Board regularly organizes the Inter College Sports and Cultural meets besides organizing and sending te3ams to various Inter University tournaments in All India basis. Moreover to encourage and give more opportunity to the Sports person, the Sports Board has started the Centre for Studies in physical Education and Sports from 2009.
Health Care Centre
The Dibrugarh University Health Centre was first established in 1971 with a full-time Pharmacist and visiting Physicians of the Assam Medical College and Hospital. After 2 years a full-time Medical Officer was appointed. Another employee worked as a Dresser cum Peon cum all propose worker. A regular Dresser was employed in 1979 and a Medical Attendant cum Peon in 1982. Gradually over the years, the staff of the Health Centre was increased to its present strength of 16. Meanwhile, the Health Centre which was functioning from a temporary building near the Old main entrance of the University, shifted to an Assam Type Building in front of the Girls’ Hostels in the year 1982. But over time, the need for a better equipped Health Centre was strongly felt and finally construction of a two storied building was started in April 2008 and by March 2009 the Health Centre was shifted to this new building which has provision of 10 beds, a Minor Operation Theater with attached sterilizing room and a Laboratory.
The Health Centre at present is functioning on an out Patient basis. It remains open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on all days of the week except Sunday and other official holidays. Beyond these hours, any emergency is attended by the Resident Medical Officer with the assistance of a Staff Nurse and a Pharmacist who reside in quarter near the Health Centre building.
The University has three Canteens and a Cafeteria for the refreshment of the University Community.

The University has provided a plot of land measuring 4.63 hectare (253m X 183m) to the Department of Life Sciences (adjacent to the Department) for developing an ideal Botanical garden for ex-situ conversation of plant species representing a phytogeographic zone of this resion and to indentify as a nodal organization with regard to conservation and propagation of threatened endemic species of this region. As it is known that the undivided Dibrugarh district is rich in bio-diversity having different kinds to vegetations due to suitable humid climate. But due to anthropogenic reasons also many of the plant species are in the state of endangered condition. No such systematic approaches have been made so far for ex-situ conservation of these endangered/ vulnerable endemic species.
There is a central Internet facility in Dibrugarh University. It is located in the Lakshminath Bezbaroa Granthagar. It is equipped with a 1Gbps link provided under the NKN project.

Day Care Centre
The Day Care Centre, Dibrugarh University was established on2nd September 2008 under the guidance of then Vice Chancellor, Dibrugarh University, Prof. K K Deka. An integral part of the UGC system, this Centre was established to provide relief to the working mothers of the University Fraternity. Started with one Supervisor and one Ayah, now this Centre is working with two supervisors and two ayahs. Currently this centre has 75 children. The workers of the Centre are highly dedicated and they have been trying to offer support to the working mothers so that they can pay attention to their professional life. The Centre has good infrastructural facility with sufficient number of beds, sports items, furniture and crockery items for the children. As a part of its extended activity, the Day Care Centre has started providing nursery and pre-nursery courses for the kids. At present there are 50 kids at the nursery and pre-nursery classes and the rest 25 are below the age of three who avail the crèche facility as such. The nursery and pre-nursery education given at the Centre help many kids in obtaining seats at the reputed schools of the Dibrugarh Town like Don Bosco, Little Flower and Salt Brook etc. The Day Care Centre is also helping the working mothers of the fringe area who are not the members of the University community. The Centre is assisted by a committee formed with the help of the faculty and employees of the Dibrugarh University.
