H.R. College of Commerce & Economics is one of the leading commerce and management colleges, affiliated to the prestigious University of Mumbai (Bombay). Today, there are over 7000 students and each year the institution grows from strength to strength.
The College has achieved excellent academic standards, while simultaneously creating opportunities for the all round development of students through sports and cultural activities by transferring the responsibility of the learning to the learner. The College empowers students and fosters young leaders. It has the highest number of students pursuing Chartered Accountancy with B.Com. The college has obtained 100% results at the undergraduate level and excelled in extra-curricular activities.
H.R. College was awarded the 'Best College' by the University of Mumbai for 2010-2011. The institution was recognized for its leadership potential, its teaching excellence, its innovative learner-centric approach and its strong international linkages. It was the first college in Maharashtra to be accredited 'A' grade with a score of 87.95% by the NAAC (National Assessment & Accreditation Council) in 2002. In 2008, HR College was awarded an 'A' Grade by NAAC once again; with a CGPA of 3.46. In Jan 2013 the college underwent a third accreditation process with NAAC awarding H.R. College of Commerce & Economics with a CGPA of 3.72 on a scale of 4, the highest CGPA in India under the revised scheme; and the highest score in Maharashtra till March 23, 2013.
H.R. College also has the unique distinction of having received autonomy in 2007 from the University Grants Commission (UGC), making it the first college in the 150-year history of the University of Mumbai to have achieved this feat. The College will implement autonomy in due course.
The college strives for excellence in teaching and learning at undergraduate / postgraduate levels. In 1994, the college introduced the UGC's Scheme of Vocationalisation with Advertising, Sales Promotion & Sales Management, Tourism & Travel Management, Tax Procedure & Practice and Principles & Practices of Insurance.
The college was first to introduce an Honours' Programme whereby along with the undergraduate program a student can earn honours credits as well. The conventional Bachelor of Commerce continues to be the core of HR College's educational framework but the College has subsequently expanded to introduce other specialised courses in B.Com. Greater academic rigor was built in for students pursuing Honors programme by adding social and community service projects into the credit earning requirements. Several new enrichment programmes were added to the ones already taught at the college. The curriculum for additional certificate programs was sent for endorsement to industry experts to ensure that it met the industry needs.
Being at the hub of the business district, H.R. was the first college in Mumbai to initiate strong industry-academia relations. Industry experts are regularly invited to come and share their business strategies and experiences. This interaction helps the students to keep abreast with the latest developments in the business sector which in turn equips them for their professional lives. Each year the best names in the corporate sector offer H.R. students internships and placements.
Internationalisation has become the focal point of the teaching learning process at H.R. The college leads the way in student and faculty exchange programs. This exposure helps the faculty to understand the best practices of leading institutions and incorporate them in their teaching methods. The students are offered scholarships and exchange programs from institutions like NYU Stern , USA and King's College, UK, which helps them gain a global perspective.
The institution has a very active alumni association. Academic facilities :
i) Class Rooms: All classrooms have been upgraded with state-of-the-art technology. A large number of classrooms are air-conditioned and have audio-visual techno-savvy facilities such as Computers, LCDs, Wi-Fi system. Other rooms are equipped with a smart-cart facility, pulldown screens and whiteboards. (A smart-cart includes a computer and LCD Projector on a trolley which can be transferred to those classrooms which may not have a computer facility). The college has made optimal utilization of space as many classrooms can be converted into larger auditoriums.
ii) Conference Room and Seminar Room: Both the rooms are air-conditioned, techno-savvy and have been created for conferences, seminars, workshops, distinguished lectures and for classroom presentations. The Seminar Room is also used by faculty for centralized assessment and moderation.
iii) ICICI Learning Matrix: In this cell, computers have been installed by ICICI Bank for programmed online learning. The students can learn Banking, Insurance, Management and Finance subjects online and can also undertake online testing. The facility is also useful for faculty to upgrade their skills.
iv) Research Cell: A full-fledged Research Cell with modern computer facilities is created for the benefit of staff and students for their research projects.
v) Teaching Learning Material Centre (TLMC): This has been created to provide teaching support to faculty. Books, reference material, visual aids, computer aided teaching material is collected from local and international publishers to assist teachers to customize their teaching. Teachers' manuals and test banks help teachers to create diverse exam papers including scantron tests with multiple choice questions. The TLMC is housed in the library.
vi) Computer Labs: In keeping with the core NAAC values of fostering a global competency, the college has well-equipped Computer Labs practically on each floor. These are utilized for conducting computer practicals, ICT - Certificate Courses and assisting faculty and students in research and project preparation. The computer labs have been completely modernized and internet facilities are available as the labs are Wi-Fi enabled.
vii) Library: The college has a well-equipped, open access library with an air-conditioned reading room and language lab. The library has adopted the latest software and has a large collection of books, journals, magazines and audio-visual resources.
viii) DTP Centre: A state-of-the-art DTP Centre with techno-savvy Scantron, publishing machines and copier has been set up recently.
Co-curricular Activities :
i) Mini Conference Room: A Mini Conference room on the first floor is used for discussion and important meetings. It has an electronic board and a tea-coffee vending machine.
ii) Board Room: The Board Room is used for all faculty interviews and staff meetings.
iii) Placement Cell: The College has a Placement Cell which looks after placements of all the degree programmes and is supervised by a Placement Director and student assistants. The Placement Cell has well-equipped computer facilities and notice boards.
Extra Curricular Activities :
i) Gymnasium: An air-conditioned gym is available for students to plan their sports activities. The college also has tied up with leading clubs and associations for Cricket and Football grounds, Swimming pool facilities, Squash and Tennis courts.
ii) Penthouse: This facility is created on the terrace of the building for the students' extra curricular activities. Cabins have been created for the Students' Council and for CHOICE (a student body handling inter-collegiate events). The Penthouse is extensively used for dances, debates, discussions and other activities. It is equipped with a music system and a small cafeteria.
iii) The Butterfly Café is the college canteen. This canteen is the most popular hub where students organize major events.
iv) Maintenance & Service Centre (M & S): This has been set up to support extra curricular and academic activities by supplying microphones, smart carts, music systems, lighting and other technological needs.
The college provides all modern facilities for the convenience of women students and staff. The Ladies Common Room has comfortable sofas, chairs and hygienic attached bathrooms. A special lady assistant is employed to look after the needs of girl students and to maintain the facilities. Locker facilities are also available in the common room. The Womens' Development Cell of the college looks after the health & hygiene needs of the girl students.
With ninety five per cent of the staff being ladies, the air-conditioned staff room is geared to meet their needs as clean washrooms, well-equipped kitchen and pantry facilities are provided for their convenience.
