Indian Institute of Information Technology Design & Manufacturing Kancheepuram (IIITD&M Kancheepuram) is a Centre of Excellence for technical education and research established in 2007 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India to pursue design and manufacturing oriented engineering education and research and to promote the competitive advantage of Indian products in global markets.
It is one of the two IIITD&Ms, the other one being located in Jabalpur. The institute,which was operating from its temporary campus within the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, which was also its mentor institute, has moved to its permanent campus at Kelambakkam-Vandalur road near Chennai in 2011. The institute offers academic and research programs that integrate engineering design, manufacturing and management with information technology. The institute offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs which focus on IT, design and manufacturing in engineering sectors.
The institute is located on a 51 acre campus on the outskirts of Chennai, off the Vandalur-Kelambakkam road. It is a fully residential campus with all students residing within the campus. The campus houses the academic block, the administrative block, lecture hall complex and laboratory block.
The Institute is presently offering B.Tech programmes in Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering (Design & Manufacturing) and Mechanical Engineering (Design & Manufacturing), M.Des in Electronic Systems Design, Communication Systems Design, Mechanical Systems Design and inter-disciplinary Ph.D programmes in core and applied areas of engineering. The faculty members of the Institute are also involved in sponsored and consultancy research projects from reputed industries and government organizations. From the academic year 2014 onwards, the institute will be offering five unique dual degree programmes leading to B.Tech and M.Tech.
The curricula for all the programs have been framed after extensive deliberations and discussions with IITs, IISc and other reputed Institute faculty members and industry stake holders. The programmes are aimed at providing solutions to current technological challenges in wide domains like robotics, home entertainment, telecommunication automotive systems, etc. Design engineers and researchers passing out from IIITD&M Kancheepuram will find scope and relevance in IT and IT enabled product companies, in particular analog and digital electronics IC companies, embedded systems players, automotive design, consumer product design and manufacturing and knowledge/service based industries. IIITD&M Kancheepuram was functioning at IIT Madras campus till Aug 2011. Later, the Institute moved to its permanent campus located at about 30 kms from Chennai International airport, at Melakottaiyur village, off Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road, Chennai – 600 127.
The state of the art permanent campus is under development in 51.75 Acres allotted by the Govt of Tamilnadu which is close to many educational institutes and is well connected to the City. Institute’s master plan of boasts of 2,98,311 Sq.m. built up area in 51.75 acres. The campus houses Academic Facilities, Residential Facilities including Student Hostels and Staff Quarters and Sports facilities. Library plays an important role to provide quality information and services to the members and committed to support the Institute’s mission. The Library uses an automated (Library and Information Management) software KOHA with Integrated RFID Technology. All the registered users can access the Institute library anywhere within the campus through LAN/WiFi.
The Library has an excellent collection of books, printed journals, magazines, leading newspapers, e-Journals., and softcopy of NPTEL course materials and video contents. The Library maintains a separate collection of reference books. The Library follows the Machine Readable Catalogue (MARC 21) standard for cataloguing and Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) scheme for classification of Library documents.
Institute is one of the core members of Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Sciences and Technology (INDEST) consortium and has subscribed nearly 600 e-journals, conference proceedings, standards, viz IEL (IEEE & IEE) and Elsevier Science Direct Links.
IIITD&M provides a good blend of academic, cultural, social, and athletic experience to all the students, scholars, staffs and faculties. The hostel life begins at 5pm and various co-curricular activities such as designer's club, coding club etc., are coordinated by the respective hostel technical secratary all through the year. In addition to this, many cultural and social activities also happen during the academic year.
Hostel and Mess
The IIITD&M being a residential Institute provides accommodation to all its students. At present Jasmine hostel is for girls and Asoka, Lotus, Banyan and a new 15 storied hostels are for boys. The rooms are built with scientific simulation for its ventilation and day light. The rooms are attached with individual balcony fully covered with a security grill. Every room is provided with two numbers of spacious wardrobes, a cot, a chair and a table. Every hostel is provided with telephones and internet connectivity. Students can relax in the evenings or on holidays or spend their leisure time in the Common Room which is equipped with a T.V, a music system, newspapers and magazines.
To ensure overall development of every student, the Institute provides all the required facilities for sports and recreation. Gym facility, outdoor stadiums for cricket, Football, Basket ball, Athletic tracks etc and facility for indoor games like Caroms, Chess etc are available in the campus. All the activities are coordinated by Designer’s club, in which every student of the Institute should be a member. All the rooms are provided with LAN and common areas with Wi-Fi. Faculty members of the institute regularly publish research articles in journals and conferences of international reputation. They also serve on the program committee / editorial board of International / National conferences and journals.
The institute houses some of the most modern and state of the art research equipment like the scanning electron microscope, video microscope, Coordinate Measurement Machine, NI Elvis kits, etc. and simulation softwares such as PROE, CAD/CAM, MATLAB, ALGOR, NI LabView, UniGraphics, etc.

A unique aspect of our Design & Manufacturing oriented curriculum is the Practice course of PRODUCT DESIGN AND PROTOTYPING both for undergraduates and graduates. The aim of this course is to allow students to innovate , develop and design a new product in a semester’s duration. Students are involved in new product design / development under the guidance of faculty members.
