Ranchi College is one of the oldest constituent units of Ranchi University. Beginning in 1926 as Intermediate College, Ranchi College was upgraded to graduate level in 1946 and post-graduate level in 1951. Thereafter, it is continuing to grow and expand. Today it teaches BA/BSc Honours and General Courses in 22 subjects and Postgraduate in 10 subjects, and has vocational and self-financed courses in Computer Application, Information Technology, Bachelor of Education, and Master of Law.
Any educational institution has teaching as its primary function, and what it teaches becomes abundantly clear when the curricular and co-curricular aspects are examined. Ranchi College provides higher education after matriculation – from Intermediate to Master’s level in Science, Social Science, and Humanities. In all subjects the faculty also provides supervision and guidance for Doctoral Degree. Thus Ranchi College is a complete educational institution in itself and the students are not compelled to change the institution frequently.
The College follows the National Curriculum of UGC in all faculties and disciplines. Ranchi College offers Honours and General courses in 22 subjects and Master’s Course in 10 subjects. In addition, the college provides opportunity to study modern frontier subjects like Information Technology and Computer Application. Courses in Bachelor of Education from 2005-06 session and LL M from 2004-05 session have also been started on self-financing basis successfully.
A good number of the faculties are also the members of various academic and administrative bodies of the university like Syndicate, Senate, Academic Council, Board of Studies etc. They are also working as paper-setters, head examiners, examiners, and evaluation experts, External Examiners in other colleges and Universities. A large number of them are also acting as Resource Persons in Orientation and Refresher Courses run by UGC Academic Staff Colleges.

It gives me immense pleasure and joy in welcoming our visitors at Ranchi College, Ranchi. It goes without saying that it is an honour and privilege to be the Principal of the Ranchi College, which is considered to be one of the premier educational institutions of the State of Jharkhand.
The college, which started its journey in 1926, has made great strides in last nine decades. Initially started as Intermediate College, it was turned into a Degree College and named Ranchi Government Degree College in 1946. In an about 1950, the college was named Ranchi College. In 1951, the college was given Post Graduate status. The college, which was earlier affiliated to Bihar University till 1960, is now a constituent autonomous unit of Ranchi University. The college has been given a tag of ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ by the University Grants Commission (UGC), Ranchi.
Here at the college we are taking care of all round personality development leading towards excellence career by paying personal attention to every individual student. Our teachers are successfully detecting creative possibilities dormant in our students and encouraging them to reach new heights. I am sure that our students are now grown enough to realise the true spirit of education. Here I want to point out that education is not just passing examination and receiving Degrees, it is, at bottom, a simultaneous development of body and mind and the true aim of education is building up of sound character.
I wish to urge our students who are reading should prepare for examination with full sincerity and honesty. I hope that students would not lose self-confidence. Here I want to point out that one may face disappointments but they are temporary. Honest efforts would finally lead to success in life. It should never be forgotten that no career, however, bright is a history of uninterrupted success. I have to say that it should be our paramount aim to determine our goals and make sincere and honest efforts to achieve our aim.
I am a happy person as teaching as well as non-teaching staff and students are rendering their wholehearted support and corporation to making the college the Centre of Excellence. By such a company of talented teachers and disciplined students, I hope, that our vision would materialise as we are successfully braving all the difficulties.
