Rani Birla Girls’ College was established in July 1961 as an undergraduate arts college affiliated to the University of Calcutta by the Hindusthan Charity Trust to service as a women’s educational institution to impart all-round education to its students in a progressive, enlightened ambience. Rani Birla Girls’ College has moved ahead with the today functioning as an aided institution of the Government of West Bengal.

The mission of the college has always been the empowerment of women through higher education and social consciousness, to motivate students to achieve distinction in academic, administrative and cultural spheres, to venture into self-employment and entrepreneurship, to inculcate values in students to help them become responsible citizens of tomorrow.

Salient Features:

Canteen facility - A canteen is run within college premises which supplies fresh and palatable foods to the students. No rent is charged by the college from the concerned canteen owner so that she can supply food items at affordable prices to the students.

Medical check up – Regular medical check up (free of cost) for students by a registered medical practitioner has been introduced in the institution. The lady doctor examines the students and prescribes appropriate diet and medicines if required. A sick room has been arranged within the college premises where any student who falls sick during college hours can take rest and is given some common medicines so that she can recover at least temporarily.

Career Counseling – The college organizes career counseling session for the students in association with professional organization like NIIT, Frankfinn, Wigan and Leigh College(I),Scaffold Academy etc.

Psychological Counselling – Students have the opportunity to undergo psychological counselling in the cell designed for the purpose which helps them to overcome various psychological problems as well as to cope with stress.

Physical Training – Students receive regular physical training under a trained physical instructress during college hours. • Add on courses – Yoga and Aerobic classes are held in the college for the students.Painting classes for teaching Glass Painting,Pot Painting etc.are also held in the college for interested students.

IT education and training – Students get benefited in terms of IT infrastructural facilitation,IT literacy usinf internet for ready reference and comprehensive study in their respective subjects,learning various softwares and IT tools used in business integration,generating excellence by imparting their innovations through multimedia from Rani Birla Girl's College IT Academy,jointly initiated by the college and Webel Informatics Ltd.


The college has a well-endowed general library containing books on Philosophy and psychology, Religion, Social sciences, Language, Earth Science, Fine Arts, Literature, Geography and History. It is also holding the collections on specialized and professional disciplines like Communicative English, Journalism and Mass Communication, and Fashion & Apparel Design.

The collection of reference books in the library is also very impressive. The number of titles in the collection of the general Library is 13,768 as on April 15, 2012. The number of journals / periodicals subscribed by the library is 14. The stock of books and journals are enhanced with new purchases every year.

Library Automation - The complete process of automation of the college general Library is underway and is expected to be complete very soon. The cataloguing part has been completed using SOUL software and books can be searched electronically through computers.

Seminar Library - In addition to the general Library, every honours department has a seminar Library endowed with impressive collection of textbooks and reference books on the subject concerned.
Audio/Visual Collection – The library has started its audio/visual collection with 68 CDs/DVDs, which includes academic subjects, films/movies (on history, literature) etc.


The department of Geography has a well-organised laboratory equipped with i) Survey instruments like Dumpy Level, Prismatic Compass, Measuring Staff, Ranging Rods, Ground Pins, etc; ii) Mapping instruments like Planimeter, Rotameter, Mirror Stereoscope,Pocket Stereoscope etc; to meet the requirements of Geography practical classes for the undergraduate honours and general courses.

The department also has a rich collection of Topographical Maps of India, Satellite Imageries, and Aerial Photographs. Over the years the department has procured several rocks and mineral samples also.

The laboratory is continuously upgraded and modernized in line with the new topics introduced in the undergraduate syllabus. Personal computers have been installed with GIS software 21st century solutions for each PC used by the students for map making.

An Audio-Visual room installed with various audio-visual instruments like television, tape recorder, overhead projector, LCD projector enables the faculty to make use of modern teaching aids. This is particularly beneficial for students doing undergraduate courses in Communicative English and in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Rani Birla Girls’ College has traveled a long way since 1961 to the present day, crossing several hurdles and gaining strength and maturity in the process. The determination and commitment of the staff and the students, to whom Rani Birla Girls’ College is a second home, have been the real wealth of this institution.
